The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) aims to rebuild a 7-kilometer section of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) road. The section starts from IFFCO Chowk and goes to Rajesh Pilot Chowk. The project is scheduled to start in early 2023 and finish in two years.
The SPR connects Golf Course Road to Sectors 55 and 56 and links the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road to the Badshahpur Crossing. The SPR begins at Sector 55 near Ghata village and finishes on NH-8, nearly a kilometer from the Kherki Daula toll plaza towards Hero Honda Chowk.
“The plan is still in its early stages, and we are looking into every option to decongest this critical link.” We are doing a preliminary study to identify potential strategies for alleviating congestion on this road and developing it along the same lines as Golf Course Road.
“We intend to include grade separation by constructing flyovers or underpasses wherever necessary,” said a senior GMDA official. The eight-and-a-half-kilometer-long Golf Course Road has 16 lanes and seven underpasses.
It was finished in 2018 to provide uninterrupted transit from DLF Cyber City near NH-8 to SPR. IT offices, hotels, residential complexes, malls, and other business establishments dot the arterial road.
The route includes at least six junctions and travels through sectors 27, 28, 29, 43, 47, 52, 52A, 56, and 57. Some key crossroads include those near the Millenium City Centre metro station, Ardee City Mall, Tau Devi Lal Park, and Hong Kong Bazar.
Furthermore, most of the stretch lacks service roads that may serve the internal traffic of the neighbouring colonies. As a result, traffic from residential neighbourhoods adds to the strain on the main road.
Aside from this route, two others connecting NH-8 to SPR-Golf Course Raod and Sohna road have previously been restored. “We also intend to construct service roads on both sides of the road, as well as improve junctions.”
Aside from that, the reconstruction design would feature footpaths, cycling tracks, and streetscaping to accommodate both vehicular traffic and walkers and bicycles. This road is a vital route that connects NH-8 to SPR and sees high traffic throughout the day.
The traffic condition is very terrible as there are no service roads along the roads. However, the new project will allow safe passage for walkers and cyclist as well along the service roads.
