Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) Officials announced that the area between the Sikanderpur Metro Station and the IFFCO Chowk will shortly undergo streetscape and remodelling work.
The first project of its kind in Gurugram would see the creation of a dedicated pedestrian walkway, cycle lanes, green spaces with kids play area, benches, bus stops, and vending areas.
According to GMDA officials, MG Road was picked for reconstruction since it was an important thoroughfare known as the city’s mall road. The route is lined with residential communities, metro stations, businesses, and shopping malls, but it lacks the necessary infrastructure to accommodate bicycles or pedestrian traffic.
This is our first project for city development and street landscaping. There will be table-top crossings every 500 metres, vending areas, bus shelters, and supporting infrastructure for cyclists and pedestrians, in addition to walkways in green spaces with seating and children’s play areas, according to GMDA executive engineer Amit Godara. This will allow people to cross the road without using a metro station or jaywalking.
Although the idea was initially planned in 2021, a tender launched that year was not released because the prospective companies lacked sufficient streetscaping experience. The work was assigned in April of this year after the tender was floated once more in August. The work should be completed by the end of the December.
Residents of this region expressed excitement for the renovation but worry about encroachments. MG Road’s beautification is welcome, but it won’t be successful unless we address worries about encroachments and unlawful businesses in the area.
Pedestrians and bikers share dedicated spaces everywhere in the world. Even if the mall is close to our home, we still need to drive there, according to Rajeev Sinha, president of the Essel Towers RWA.
