The long-awaited underpass at Vatika Chowk on Sohna Road begins after a little delay. The NHAI has begun soil testing, which is required before the construction of underpasses.
The highways authority has written to the GMDA, MCG, and other agencies to share information about the area’s underground utilities and the estimated costs for shifting.
Construction is expected to begin after the GMDA receives a portion of the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) for the underpass. The project’s detailed project report (DPR), which is expected to take around six months to complete once construction begins, is complete.
The project will cost Rs. 109 crores, as the GMDA will share the costs with the NHAI, and the highways authority will carry out the project.
“Soil testing has begun, and we have written to local agencies to share details about the underground utilities and shifting costs,” said an NHAI official, adding that utility relocation will take place concurrently with underpass construction.
How Will The Vatika Chowk Underpass Improve Traffic Flow?
According to GMDA officials, a significant portion of the total project cost has been transferred to NHAI.
The underpass is expected to improve traffic flow from Golf Course Road to new sectors along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and vice versa.
The GMDA intends to redevelop SPR by building eight flyovers and an underpass along the 12km stretch.
Aside from the eight proposed flyovers, NHAI will also build an underpass at Vatika Chowk to improve traffic flow along the stretch.
According to Sumit Sharma, a resident of Sector 67, the construction of the elevated Sohna Road has had no effect on traffic on Vatika Chowk.
“It takes a long time to get through this intersection.” The construction of the underpass may improve traffic flow.
