The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has begun a special repair and upgrade of all roads between sectors 58 and 67 at the cost of 34.37 crores, officials said, after the roads became pothole-ridden and accident-prone.
According to officials, a total length of nearly 18 kilometres will be repaired and upgraded. Work on a distance of approximately 11km has already been completed, and work on the remaining portion is expected to be completed by March 2023.
Once these revamp works are completed, the entire pocket from sectors 58 to 67 will have smooth roads, which will improve the overall driving experience for daily commuters.
Officials with the GMDA stated that the decision to repair the roads was made after residents complained that the potholes were causing accidents. The traffic junctions on this stretch will also be improved, according to Sudhir Rajpal, chief executive officer of the GMDA.
According to Jogender Singh, former president of the Sushant Lok 2 and 3 residents’ welfare association, the stretches were in poor condition, resulting in several accidents. “The roads were in terrible condition because of low maintenance. “The number of potholes increased after the monsoon, and residents began avoiding the stretches, preferring to take a three-kilometre alternative route,” he said.
“The road development work is being prioritised by GMDA to improve citizens’ commuting experience,” said Amit Godara, executive engineer of Infrastructure 1. Workmanship and timely completion of the projects are given special consideration.
The roads had developed rutting and surface cracks, according to officials. “After teams visited the site and took the project evaluation, an estimate of 34.47 crore for special renovation plan was prepared,” he said.
According to Rajpal, road safety equipment such as cats eyes, delineators, median markers, and reflective tape on hazardous objects, as well as cautionary and informative signboards, will be installed under the Indian Roads Congress (IRC) guidelines. He is closely monitoring the progress of the work and has directed the teams to perform all required quality checks to ensure that the developed roads are of high quality.
