According to officials familiar with the situation, the Gururgam Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is planning a series of measures to decongest the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and improve the city’s connection with the Indira Gandhi International Airport.

Sudhir Rajpal, CEO of the GMDA, stated that the agency is looking into the possibility of building a double-decker road between Sirhaul toll plaza and Rajokri, which would reduce congestion at the border.

The steps are being taken after Delhi International Airport Ltd, which operates Indira Gandhi International Airport, brought the issue of heavy vehicular congestion to the attention of the GMDA.

According to GMDA officials, the airport operator expects passenger traffic to skyrocket in the coming years, causing increased congestion on Gurugram roads. They are planning to take a number of required steps to lessen the congestion on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and other city roads connecting Delhi.

According to GMDA officials, during a meeting, the airport operator informed them that passenger traffic at Indira Gandhi International Airport is likely to increase from its current capacity of 70 million passengers per year to 109 million passengers by September 2023.

There was an urgent need to decongest the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and integrate the proposed Metro links with the airport line and the DMRC Blue line. According to Rajpal, the agency has proposed that airline passengers’ baggage be checked in at the proposed Palam Vihar station to ensure smooth access to passengers at the airport.

The GMDA CEO said at the Sirhaul toll plaza that they are considering building a double-decker road between the Sirhaul toll plaza and Rajokari to reduce congestion on the Delhi-Gurgaon border.

“This is a permanent bottleneck, and a flyover or a double-decker road could help,” he said. The authority also intends to relocate the MCD toll plaza at Sirhaul near the KMP Expressway in order to charge a green tax on commercial vehicles entering Delhi.
