The proprietor of a firm involved in repair work was arrested by Gurugram police in connection with the Chintels Paradiso building collapse that killed two people in February.
Amit Austin, owner of Manish Switchgear and Construction, will appear in a city court on Thursday, according to Manoj Kumar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Udyog Vihar. Police had previously identified the proprietor as Ajay Austin.
On February 10, the dining room floor of a sixth-floor apartment in Tower D at Chintels Paradiso in Sector 109 collapsed, triggering the collapse of roofs and floors directly beneath it, up to the first floor, killing two women.
A month ago, a magisterial inquiry determined that retrofitting in flat D 603 was the primary cause of the collapse and held both Chintels India and Manish Switchgear and Construction responsible.
A special investigation team (SIT) led by ACP Kumar had called Amit Austin to join the investigation on Wednesday, based on the magisterial inquiry report. He was later arrested.
“We have arrested and questioned Amit Austin, the director of Manish Switchgear and Constructions. “He will have to appear in a city court tomorrow,” the ACP stated.
Ramachandran stated that the special investigation team was looking into the matter (SIT). “At the time of the collapse, the contractor’s team was laying tiles in the apartment without taking any safety precautions,” she said.
On Wednesday, officials from the Chintels Paradiso declined to comment. Previously, the company stated that it would provide full cooperation to the agencies in their investigation.
In the case, a case was registered under Indian Penal Code sections 304A (causing death by negligence), 34 (common intention), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 417 (cheating), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (forgery), 467 (forgery for valuable security), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating), and 471 (using as genuine a forged document), as well as sections 10 and 12 of the Haryana.
